Light Guiding by Effective Gauge Field for Photons
We propose a waveguiding mechanism based on the effective gauge potential for photons. The waveguide geometry consists of core and cladding regions with the same underlying dispersion relation, but subject to different gauge potentials. This geometry can be realized in a dynamically modulated resonator lattice and provides a conceptually straightforward and dynamically reconfigurable mechanism ...
متن کاملLight-induced gauge fields for ultracold atoms.
Gauge fields are central in our modern understanding of physics at all scales. At the highest energy scales known, the microscopic universe is governed by particles interacting with each other through the exchange of gauge bosons. At the largest length scales, our Universe is ruled by gravity, whose gauge structure suggests the existence of a particle-the graviton-that mediates the gravitationa...
متن کاملContinuum Gauge Fields from Lattice Gauge Fields
On the lattice some of the salient features of pure gauge theories and of gauge theories with fermions in complex representations of the gauge group seem to be lost. These features can be recovered by considering part of the theory in the continuum. The prerequisite for that is the construction of continuum gauge fields from lattice gauge fields. Such a construction, which is gauge covariant an...
متن کاملGuiding spatial arrangements of silver nanoparticles by optical binding interactions in shaped light fields.
We demonstrate assembly of spheroidal Ag nanoparticle clusters, chains and arrays induced by optical binding. Particles with diameters of 40 nm formed ordered clusters and chains in aqueous solution when illuminated by shaped optical fields with a wavelength of 800 nm; specifically, close-packed clusters were formed in cylindrically symmetric optical traps, and linear chains were formed in line...
متن کاملGuiding and reflecting light by boundary material
We study effects of finite height and surrounding material on photonic crystal slabs of oneand two-dimensional photonic crystals with a pseudo-spectral method and finite difference time domain simulation methods. The band gap is shown to be strongly modified by the boundary material. As an application we suggest reflection and guiding of light by patterning the material on top/below the slab.
